Prevalence and course of anxiety disorders and symptoms from preschool to adolescence: A 6-wave community study
Journal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry Aug 02, 2021
Steinsbekk S, et al. - Since the rate of various anxiety disorders in early childhood and whether they continue into middle childhood or adolescence is unknown, researchers reported on the prevalence and stability of DSM-5-defined anxiety disorders and their symptoms, capturing the period from preschool to adolescence. Anxiety was measured in a sample of Norwegian children (n = 1,041) aged 4 to 14 years old using interviewer-based clinical interviews. According to the results, almost 10% had an anxiety disorder at some time point. Specific phobia was the most common disorder in early and middle childhood, while generalized anxiety disorder increased in prevalence and overtook it as the most common anxiety disorder by the age of 14. Anxiety disorders are common in childhood. Anxiety symptoms in early childhood do not generally predict later anxiety symptoms. However, such symptoms are less likely to disappear in middle childhood, indicating that this developmental stage is especially important for prevention and treatment efforts.
