BMC Psychiatry Jan 08, 2020
Park H, et al. - Researchers sought to determine the 1-year prevalence of suicidal ideation in firefighters via undertaking a web-based survey using a self-reported questionnaire. In addition, they sought the correlates of past-year suicidal ideation among the demographic, occupational and clinical characteristics. Among a total of 45,698 Korean firefighters analyzed, analysis, the 1-year prevalence of suicidal ideation of 10.66% was identified. This high 1-year prevalence was linked with various occupational factors as well as psychiatric symptoms. Significant correlates of suicidal ideation in the previous year were recent traumatic experience, high levels of occupational stress from physical work environment and emotional labor, as well as the current duty of officer, even after controlling for the effects of posttraumatic stress disorder and depressive symptoms. Further, suicidal ideation in the previous year among firefighters was noted in correlation with female gender and marital status of divorced/separated/widowed. Findings emphasize early detection and management of these risk factors to decrease the risk of suicidal ideation in firefighters.
