Prevalence and correlates of carotid plaque in a mixed HIV-serostatus cohort in Uganda
BMC Cardiovascular Disorders Dec 20, 2021
Bibangambah P, Hemphill LC, Acan M, et al. - Researchers examined people living with HIV (PLWH) to determine their increased risk of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ACVD) in sub-Saharan Africa.
This is a cross-sectional analysis nested within the Ugandan Noncommunicable Diseases and Aging Cohort.
Enrolled were 155 PLWH in rural Uganda (aged > 40 years) taking antiretroviral therapy (ART) for at least 3 years, and a control group of 154 HIV-uninfected age- and gender-matched persons.
Carotid ultrasonography was conducted and ACVD risk factor data were collected.
Findings revealed higher prevalence of carotid plaque in PLWH.
