Prevalence and coprevalence of chronic comorbid conditions in patients with type 2 diabetes in Catalonia: A population-based cross-sectional study
BMJ Open Nov 06, 2019
Mata-Cases M, et al. - Two hundred and eighty-six primary care teams of the Catalonian Health Institute (Catalonia, Spain) were involved in a cross-sectional study in order to assess the prevalence and coprevalence of various chronic conditions in individuals with T2DM in a Mediterranean region. A total of 373,185 persons were investigated. Comorbidities ≥ 2 and ≥ 4 were shown by 82% and 31% of individuals, respectively. Hypertension, hyperlipidemia, obesity, CKD, chronic renal failure (CRF) and cardiovascular disease were the most common comorbidities. The combination of hypertension with hyperlipidemia, obesity, CKD, CRF or cardiovascular disease, as well as the combination of hyperlipidemia with obesity, CKD, CRF or cardiovascular disease were the most commonly coprevalent pairs of chronic conditions. Other frequent pairs of comorbidities were obesity/CKD, obesity/CRF, hypertension/retinopathy, hypertension/albuminuria, hypertension/urinary tract infection, CVD/CRF and CVD/CKD, which were each there in more than 10% of individuals. Hence, persons with T2DM have a high frequency of coprevalence of metabolic risk factors, cardiovascular disease, and CKD and therefore need an integrated management strategy.
