Prevalence and characteristics of urinary incontinence in a treatment-seeking male prospective cohort: Results from the LURN study
The Journal of Urology Mar 01, 2018
Helfand BT, et al. - In a male treatment-seeking cohort enrolled in the Symptoms of Lower Urinary Tract Dysfunction Research Network (LURN), the prevalence of urinary incontinence (UI) was assessed by the experts. Findings suggested UI to be common in the treatment-seeking men. Researchers found it to be concerning as the guideline-recommended questionnaires for evaluating male LUTS did not query for UI. Therefore, an opportunity to intervene and improve patient care could be missed by the clinicians. A substantial rationale was provided by this for a new or updated symptom questionnaire that gave a more comprehensive symptom assessment. Compared to the non-UI group, black men and those having sleep apnea were more likely to be in the UI group.
