Preterm delivery and long-term risk of hypertension in women

JAMA Oct 18, 2021

Crump C, Sundquist J, Sundquist K, et al. - A large population-based cohort of women was examined to determine the long-term risks of hypertension in women who deliver preterm.

  • This cohort study involved more than 2 million women in Sweden.

  • Risk of developing hypertension within the next 10 years appeared greater than 1.6-fold for women who delivered preterm and a 2.2-fold for women who delivered extremely preterm when compared with those who delivered full term after adjusting for preeclampsia, other hypertensive disorders of pregnancy, and other maternal factors.

  • While a reduction occurred in these risks, the risks remained significantly raised 40 years later and were not explained by shared familial factors.

  • Overall, preterm delivery is identified to be a lifelong risk factor for hypertension in women.
