Presurgical comorbidities as risk factors for chronic postsurgical pain following total knee replacement
Clinical Journal of Pain Jun 13, 2019
Skrejborg P, et al. - Researchers examined medical records containing information with regard to comorbidities in order to recognize presurgical risk factors for the development of chronic postsurgical knee pain (CPSP) 5 years after total knee replacement (TKR). They contacted 604 patients who had undergone primary TKR surgery, 5 years after TKR; of these 352 patients provided a completed questionnaire. At follow-up, 107 patients reported Numeric Rating Scale ≥3 at follow-up. Fibromyalgia, chronic pain in body parts other than the knee, previous diagnosis of cancer, knee instability, younger age, and presurgical knee pain were the significant presurgical factors associated with CPSP. Outcomes suggest the utility of these presurgical clinical factors in correctly classifying 33.6% of patients at risk for developing CPSP 5 years following TKR.
