Prescription opioid use in general and pediatric emergency departments
Pediatrics Nov 09, 2019
Menchine M, et al. - Researchers investigated if there exists a difference in the emergency department (ED) opioid administration and prescribing between pediatric and general EDs. They used multivariate logistic regressions to examine the National Hospital Ambulatory Medical Care Survey (2006–2015), a representative survey of ED visits. Including a subpopulation of patients with a diagnosis of fracture or dislocation, a secondary analysis was also carried out. Treatment in general EDs was received by 91.1% of patients ≤ 25 years of age. Findings revealed similar odds of being given opioids while in the ED among children, adolescents, and young adults, however, a much less probability of receiving an opioid prescription from a pediatric ED vs a general ED was reported for them.
