Hudgins JD, et al. - Given that one of the leading causative factor of unintentional injury and death among adolescents and young adults in the United States is prescription opioid misuse, researchers retrospectively analyzed the National Survey on Drug Use and Health for the years 2015 and 2016 to assess past-year prevalence of prescription opioid use and misuse, sources of prescription opioids, and additional substance use in this population. In this analysis, the inclusion of 27,857 adolescents (12–17 years of age) and 28,213 young adults (18–25 years of age) was done; these corresponded to 119.3 million individuals in the extrapolated national population. In this national sample of adolescents and young adults, a prescription opioid use was reported in the past year in 27.5%, with 3.8% of adolescents and 7.8% of young adults engaged in opioid misuse or having a use disorder. Most frequently, friends or relatives or a single prescriber provided the opioids to the respondents, and much less often drug dealers or multiple prescribers were the source for opioids. Adolescents and young adults with any type of opioid misuse significantly more frequently reported using additional substances and drugs of abuse, with a third or more describing prior use of cocaine, hallucinogens, and inhalants and a half or more recording past month use of tobacco, alcohol, or cannabis. Relative to adolescents, young adults engaging in opioid misuse showed a higher tendency for additional substance use and drug abuse. These findings highlight the relevance of drug and alcohol screening programs in this population.
