Prescription opioid use among acute gout patients discharged from the emergency department

Arthritis Care & Research Jul 09, 2019

Dalal DS, et al. - Four hundred and fifty-six adult gout subjects discharged from the emergency department (ED) or hospital were recognized using ICD-9 or ICD-10 diagnostic codes by the researchers in order to determine the burden of opioid use (since prescription opioid is the leading contributor to the ongoing opioid epidemic) and factors correlated with its use. One hundred and twenty-nine patients were prescribed opioids at discharge, accounting for 80% fresh cases. The average dose of prescription was 37.9±17.2mg of morphine similar for a median span of 8 days. Higher odds of receiving opioids at discharge were observed in patients with a polyarticular gout attack, diabetes and those who used opioids before admission. Hence, for the management of acute gout, opioids were generally consumed, regardless of the availability of effective treatments. Moreover, this study reflected a chance to control the opioid epidemic in gout patients.
