The Bone & Joint Journal Nov 13, 2019
Cehic M, et al. - In this World Hip Trauma Evaluation, a multicentre, prospective cohort of hip fracture persons aged 60 years and older who received operative treatment for a hip fracture in NHS hospitals in England and Wales, experts determined compliance with prescription guidelines and following adherence to medication in people with hip fracture. Of 5,456 enrolled individuals with baseline data, 2,853 were prescribed bone protection medication at discharge, of which oral bisphosphonates were the most prevalent, 4,109 were prescribed vitamin D or calcium, and 606 were prescribed none. Of those who were given a bone protection medication, only 932 listed still taking their medication 120 days later. Thus, the data give a reference for prevailing prescription and adherence rates. Moreover, in individuals with hip fracture, sticking with oral medication continues to be poor.
