Prepregnancy care in women with type 1 diabetes improves HbA1c and glucose variability without worsening hypoglycaemia time and awareness
Diabetes Research and Clinical Practice Jul 05, 2019
Perea V, et al. - In this prospective pilot study, researchers assessed the impact of a prepregnancy care (PPC) program, beyond HbA1c, on hypoglycemia awareness and glycemic variability (GV). Participants in the study were 24 women with type 1 diabetes with normal hypoglycemia awareness who initiated a PPC program. In the first visit and within 2 weeks after pregnancy confirmation, hypoglycemia awareness, hypoglycemic events and GV derived from masked-continuous glucose monitoring were assessed. While there was no significant impact on awareness of hypoglycemia, a PPC program improved both HbA1c and GV in this population. In addition, women who are less likely to reach glycemic goals may be identified via GV. In order to verify these outcomes, larger studies are required.
