Prepregnancy care in women with type 1 diabetes improves HbA1c and glucose variability without worsening hypoglycaemia time and awareness: Glycaemic variability during prepregnancy care
Diabetes Research and Clinical Practice Aug 21, 2019
Perea V, et al. - In this prospective pilot study, researchers assessed the effect of a prepregnancy care (PPC) programme, beyond HbA1c, on hypoglycaemia awareness and glycaemic variability (GV). Participants in the study were 24 women with type 1 diabetes who initiated a PPC programme with normal hypoglycaemia awareness. In the first visit and within 2 weeks after confirmation of pregnancy, awareness of hypoglycaemia, hypoglycaemic events and GV derived from masked-continuous glucose monitoring was assessed. Data reported that the duration was 16.5 ± 13.0 months. According to findings, a PPC program improved both HbA1c and GV with no significant impact on awareness of hypoglycaemia. In addition, GV might help identify women who are less likely to achieve glycaemic goals. In order to verify these outcomes, larger studies are required.
