Preparative fasting for contrast-enhanced CT in a cancer center: A new approach
American Journal of Roentgenology Apr 03, 2018
Barbosa PNVP, et al. - Researchers explored the consequence of preparative fasting wherein patients were asked to fast for 4–6 hours (group 1) before contrast-enhanced CT compared to individuals who received a light meal (group 2). A comparative scrutiny was performed of the adverse symptoms observed before and after contrast agent administration in both groups of patients. It was noted that the most common adverse symptoms ie nausea, weakness and vomiting after IV contrast agent administration occurred in 45 patients (1.5%) in group 1 and 30 patients (0.9%) in group 2. Therefore, it was disclosed that very few adverse symptoms were reported irrespective of the preparative fasting. Yielded data indicated that preparation for contrast-enhanced CT could be simplified, which would decrease the discomfort and inconvenience experienced by patients.
