Preoperative vitamin D deficiency is a risk factor for postthyroidectomy hypoparathyroidism: A systematic review and meta-analysis of observational studies
Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism Jan 28, 2021
Vaitsi KD, Anagnostis P, Veneti S, et al. - Researchers examined if preoperative vitamin D deficiency (VDD) contributes to postoperative hypoparathyroidism (hypoPT) risk via meta-analyzing the best available evidence concerning the correlation between preoperative vitamin D status and hypoPT risk. Performing a comprehensive literature search in PubMed, CENTRAL and Scopus databases, they identified 39 studies for inclusion in the quantitative analysis (61,915 cases with transient and 5,712 with permanent hypoPT). Findings suggest that the risk of transient hypoPT following thyroidectomy is higher for patients with preoperative VDD. While only those with severe VDD are noted to be at increased risk for permanent hypoPT.
