Preoperative serum uric acid predicts incident acute kidney injury following cardiac surgery

BMC Nephrology Jul 11, 2018

Kaufeld T, et al. - Researchers assessed the impact of preoperative increased serum uric acid (SUA) levels relative to other known risk factors on the incidence of acute kidney injury (AKI) post-cardiac surgery. This study included 247 patients who underwent elective coronary artery bypass grafting, valve replacement/ repair or combined bypass and valve surgery. Prospective analysis of data was carried out, with the primary endpoint being the incidence of AKI as defined by the AKI criteria comparing patients with preoperative SUA levels below vs above the median. They also performed multivariate logistic regression analysis to determine independent predictors of postoperative AKI. They identified that serum uric acid was an independent risk marker for AKI after cardiac surgery and demonstrated the highest odds ratio from all evaluated factors.
