Preoperative risk assessment with computed tomography in patients undergoing lung cancer surgery
Journal of Thoracic Disease Aug 03, 2018
Ueda K, et al. - Researchers determined the utility of whole lung computed tomography (CT) for assessing preoperative pulmonary function in patients undergoing lung cancer surgery. A total of 290 patients who had lung lobectomy for cancer in authors' institute comprised the development cohort. The validation cohort included another 100 patients who subsequently underwent the same operation in a referral hospital. Quantitative CT was performed to obtain total lung volume (TLV) and emphysematous lung volume (ELV). Based on findings, they concluded that whole lung CT can be used for preoperative pulmonary function assessment in patients undergoing lobectomy for cancer; this benefit of this method may be seen particularly in patients who have difficulty in implementation of spirometry.
