Preoperative predictors and costs of 30-day readmission following inpatient pediatric tonsillectomy in the United States
Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery Jan 10, 2021
Khoury H, Azar SS, Boutros H, et al. - Using Nationwide Readmissions Database, researchers conducted this retrospective cohort study to understand national trends in 30-day postoperative readmission following inpatient pediatric tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy. Two thousand six hundred sixty (4.0%) of 66,652 patients who underwent inpatient tonsillectomy had readmission. Readmitted patients were more commonly aged < 2 years and had a higher prevalence of comorbidities, including preoperative anemia, coagulopathy, and neurologic disorders. Independent readmission predictors included age < 3 years, multiple comorbidities, and postoperative neurologic complications. The healthcare system is greatly financially burdened by readmission after inpatient tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy. Targeted strategies for enhancing preoperative evaluation and optimizing postoperative care can prevent readmission, reduce unnecessary healthcare expenditures, and improve patient results.
