Preoperative opioid use and postoperative pain associated with surgical readmissions
American Journal of Surgery Mar 07, 2019
Dasinger EA, et al. - Researchers sought to determine the extent of preoperative opioid utilization and its relationship with pain-related readmissions. They evaluated preoperative opioid use and pain-related readmissions via merging VA Surgical Quality Improvement Program data on general, vascular, and orthopedic surgeries (2007-2014) with pharmacy data. Findings suggested higher rates of readmissions related to pain among patients with a history of opioid use in the 6-month preoperative period. The frequency and dosage of preoperative opioid exposure determined this association. Variation in the risk for pain-related readmissions was observed by surgical specialty.
