Preoperative maxillary sinus imaging and the outcome of sinus floor augmentation and dental implants in asymptomatic patients
Annals of Otology, Rhinology & Laryngology Feb 12, 2020
Ritter A, et al. - Researchers intended to determine if there is a connection between preoperative maxillary sinus imaging findings and outcomes of sinus lift and dental implant procedures in asymptomatic individuals. Between 2014 and 2017, all patients who had a maxillary sinus lift and dental implant procedures were involved. In total, 145 procedures were incorporated. No sinonasal symptoms have been identified preoperatively. Peripheral mucosal thickening was the most common imaging finding. Incidental maxillary sinus imaging findings like mucosal swelling, cysts or polyps, irrespective of their severity or size, and maxillary ostial obstruction may not need to be addressed earlier to sinus augmentation and dental implant procedures in asymptomatic individuals. Patients with complete sinus opacification should be referred before surgery to an otolaryngologist. In none of the patients, post-surgical sinusitis was observed irrespective of pre-surgical imaging results.
