Preoperative facial nerve mapping to plan and guide pediatric facial vascular anomaly resection
JAMA Otolaryngology—Head & Neck Surgery Apr 04, 2018
Bly RA, et al. - Authors probed whether preoperative facial nerve mapping (FNM) was related to intraoperative facial nerve injury risk and safe surgical approach options vs standard nerve integrity monitoring (NIM). They noted an association of facial nerve mapping before facial vascular anomaly surgery with less intraoperative facial nerve injury and shorter operative time. Direct identification of individual intralesional and perilesional nerve branches was enabled through mapping, reducing the requirement for traditional anterograde facial nerve dissection, and allowing for safe removal of some lesions following partial nerve dissection through transoral or direct excision.
