Preoperative depression is a risk factor for complication and increased health care utilization following total shoulder arthroplasty
Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery Aug 07, 2020
Lunati MP, Wilson JM, Farley KX, et al. - Researchers sought to describe the correlation between a preoperative diagnosis of depression and postoperative outcomes following total shoulder arthroplasty (TSA) via this level III retrospective cohort study. From the Truven MarketScan database, 22,623 patients undergoing TSA were included in this study. These cases comprised 3,209 (14%) cases with a preoperative diagnosis of depression. Observations suggest a common occurrence of depression prior to TSA and its association with elevated risk of complications and raised health care utilization following TSA.
