Preoperative breast MRI features associated with positive or close margins in breast-conserving surgery
European Journal of Radiology Jun 19, 2019
Bae MS, et al. - Via a retrospective review of 249 patients with invasive ductal carcinoma who underwent preoperative magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and breast-conserving surgery (BCS), the researchers intended to determine preoperative MRI features in association with positive or close margins. Multifocal disease, non-mass enhancement lesion, greater background parenchymal enhancement, larger lesion size and presence of ductal carcinoma in situ on needle biopsy were concluded as independent predictors of positive or close margins. Hence, identification of these MRI features before surgery could be helpful to reduce the reoperation rate in BCS.
