Preoperative bleeding requiring transfusion: An under-reported indication for hemorrhoidectomy
American Journal of Surgery Dec 14, 2019
Krebs ED, Zhang AY, Hassinger TE, et al. - In total 520 individuals who underwent surgical hemorrhoidectomy at a single institution (2012-2017) were assessed to recognize the prevalence and risk factors for preoperative transfusion in surgical hemorrhoidectomy persons. Nearly 7.3% experienced hemorrhoidal bleeding requiring transfusion, and 80.6% reported bleeding. The bleeding needing transfusion was observed to be an under-reported complication of hemorrhoids. Moreover, enhanced recognition could result in prompt surgical treatment and less costly diagnostic workup.
