Preoperative biliary drainage of the hepatic lobe to be resected does not affect liver hypertrophy after percutaneous transhepatic portal vein embolization
Surgical Endoscopy May 10, 2019
Miura S, et al. - Researchers sought to ascertain how preoperative biliary drainage (PBD) affects liver hypertrophy after portal vein embolization (PVE). Among 169 patients who underwent major hepatectomy or palliative surgery at their hospital between January 2008 and December 2017, PVE was performed on 76 patients: 29 of these received unilateral PBD of the future liver remnant (FLR) and 47 received bilateral PBD, including that of the hepatic lobe to be resected. As per outcomes, no decrease in the FLR ratios and hypertrophy ratios was evident in correlation to PBD of the hepatic lobe to be resected. Thus, additional PBD of the target lobe is acceptable in patients with poor biliary drainage.
