Preoperative bevacizumab for tractional retinal detachment in proliferative diabetic retinopathy: A prospective randomized clinical trial
American Journal of Ophthalmology Dec 06, 2019
Arevalo JF, Lasave AF, Kozak I, et al. - Researchers performed this prospective, double-masked, randomized, multicenter, active-controlled clinical trial, to compare an intravitreal injection of 1.25 mg bevacizumab (IVB) as a preoperative adjunct to small-gauge pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) vs PPV alone, focusing on efficacy and safety in eyes with tractional retinal detachment secondary to proliferative diabetic retinopathy. Enrollment of 224 eyes of 224 patients was done between November 2013 and July 2015. A baseline test including best-corrected visual acuity, color photos, optical coherence tomography, and fluorescein angiography, was performed on all eyes. According to the findings, a decrease in intraoperative bleeding appeared as a result of using preoperative IVB, which led to improved surgical field visualization and decreased intraoperative and postoperative complications.
