Preoperative anemia independently predicts significantly increased odds of short-term complications following aseptic revision hip and knee arthroplasty
Journal of Arthroplasty Dec 03, 2020
Gu A, Chen AZ, Selemon NA, et al. - By performing this retrospective cohort analysis, researchers investigated how anemia severity could impact 30-day postoperative complications after revision hip and knee arthroplasty. They used the American College of Surgeons National Quality Improvement Program Database. Participants were all patients who received revision joint arthroplasty between 2006 to 2017. Participants were categorized on the basis of hematocrit level. An increasing risk of occurrence of any postoperative complication and death post- revision hip and knee arthroplasty was observed in relation to increasing severity of anemia. A significant trend was evident between declining preoperative hematocrit concentrations and increasing odds of postoperative complication.
