Prenatal diagnosis of transposition of the great arteries reduces postnatal mortality: A population-based study
Canadian Journal of Cardiology Jan 28, 2020
Nagata H, Glick L, Lougheed J, et al. - Given transposition of the great arteries (TGA) may be known as a life-threatening neonatal malformation, and despite the facilitation of perinatal management by prenatal detection, there still exists controversy about the influence on the outcome, and in view of this information, researchers assessed the variations in prenatal TGA diagnosis from 2009-2014 among the 5 geographic regions in Ontario, as well as contrasted the management, morbidity and death among neonates with a prenatal (prenatal cohort; n = 70) vs a postnatal (postnatal cohort; n = 76) anomaly diagnosis. Findings revealed significantly reduced time intervals from birth to neonatal care and surgery in relation to prenatal diagnosis of TGA. Improved survival was observed in relation to the prenatal diagnosis of TGA. In Ontario, a low (50% or less) prenatal detection rate of TGA was reported outside of Metropolitan Toronto, indicating the requirement for novel strategies to further enhance intra-provincial detection rates.
