Prenatal antidepressant exposure and child development at kindergarten age: A population-based study

Pediatric Research Dec 12, 2020

Park M, Hanley GE, Guhn M, et al. - Prenatal antidepressant exposure has been linked with adverse developmental outcomes, so researchers used administrative data from British Columbia, Canada (n = 94,712) to clarify the degree to which the effects are attributable to prenatal drug exposure or underlying maternal mood disturbances. In total, 3.87% (n = 3,661) of children were exposed prenatally to antidepressants in the overall study population. According to this population-based retrospective cohort study, prenatal antidepressant exposure, with no effects on other developmental domains, was selectively correlated with worse anxious behaviors and physical independence at kindergarten age. Effects are also likely to be due to the severity of maternal mental illness or other undetermined confounding factors.
