Premenopausal women with longstanding RA have peripheral joint site bone fragility
Arthritis & Rheumatology Jan 27, 2022
NOTE, original article title: Association of bone erosions and osteophytes with systemic bone involvement on high‐resolution peripheral quantitative computed tomography in premenopausal women with longstanding rheumatoid arthritis
Researchers aimed at determining the potential relationships between parameters of localized bone involvement and parameters of systemic bone involvement in the affected joints in premenopausal women with longstanding rheumatoid arthritis (RA).
Researchers investigated 80 consecutively evaluated premenopausal women with RA (mean ± SD age: 39.4 ± 6.7 years; mean ± SD disease duration: 9.8 ± 5.3 years), along with 160 healthy female control women.
Premenopausal women with longstanding RA were noted to have systemic bone fragility at peripheral joint sites.
In addition, cortical bone fragility at the distal radius and tibia mainly correlated with the presence of bone erosions, and there was an association of the presence of osteophytes with repair of trabecular bone at the distal radius.
