Formeister EJ, Chien W, Agrawal Y, et al. - In view of the important public health implications of any correlation between COVID-19 vaccination and sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL), and considering the patients presenting with audiometrically confirmed unilateral SSNHL occurring within 24 hours of COVID-19 vaccination, researchers herein investigated the national incidence of SSNHL after COVID-19 vaccination using data from the Vaccine Adverse Events Reporting System (VAERS) maintained by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). In addition, they compare this with the expected incidence of SSNHL in the wider population. For postmarket surveillance, the CDC VAERS is identified as a unique and relevant tool, which facilitates systematic research in vaccine safety on a national scale. As per the preliminary findings of VAERS data in the early phase of societal COVID-19 vaccination using 2 messenger RNA vaccines, there exists no correlation between inoculation with a SARS-CoV-2 messenger RNA vaccine and incident sudden hearing loss. While other vaccines that are currently in use were not included in the reporting period, these findings are expected to be reassuring for health care clinicians and patients to receive all scheduled doses of the vaccination as recommended by current public health guidelines.
