Prehypertension and risk of cardiovascular diseases: A meta-analysis of 47 cohort studies

Journal of Hypertension Nov 14, 2019

Han M, Li Q, Liu L, et al. - Researchers analyzed data from 47 cohort studies to determine the correlation between prehypertension (systolic blood pressure of 120–139 mmHg and/or diastolic blood pressure of 80–89 mmHg) and total cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), coronary heart disease (CHD), myocardial infarction (MI), and stroke. Studies included were published up to November 7, 2018 were selected. The investigators used fixed-effects models to pool RRs and 95% CIs. The estimation of the heterogeneity among subgroups was also done using meta-regression. In all, they noted an association of prehypertension, especially high-range, with increased risk of total CVDs, CHD, MI, and stroke. More than 10% of CVD cases could be averted via effective control of prehypertension, according to the researchers.
