Pregnancy after 24 postoperative months of Roux-en-Y gastric bypass presents risk of pregnancy complications similar to pregnancy within the first postoperative year
Annals of Nutrition and Metabolism Sep 23, 2019
Cruz S, et al. - Researchers undertook this analytical, longitudinal and retrospective study to determine how maternal-infant complications are influenced by the time interval between pregnancy and the Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB). Participants were 42 pregnant women who had earlier undergone RYGB. Based on the time interval between pregnancy and bariatric surgery, these were further classified: ≤ 12 months (G1), > 12 and < 24 months (G2) and ≥ 24 months (G3). The observed likelihood of the occurrence of maternal-infant complications was less in pregnancies occurring in the time interval of > 12 and < 24 months. Also, the harm associated with pregnancy after 24 months can be equivalent to harm caused by pregnancies occurring before the first 12 postoperative months, because this time admits the occurrence of a great catabolism, as shown in the literature.
