Prefrontal and striatal γ-aminobutyric acid levels and the effect of antipsychotic treatment in first-episode psychosis patients

de la Fuente-Sandoval C, et al. - In this present study, the researchers examined whether such abnormal γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) elevations were presented in other brain regions and persisted after antipsychotic treatment. They documented elevations of GABA levels in both the medial prefrontal cortex (MPFC) and, in the dorsal caudate of antipsychotic-naive first-episode psychosis (FEP) patients (for the first time), which normalized in both regions following 4 weeks of antipsychotic treatment.
