Head & Neck Apr 21, 2019
Ng P, et al. - A retrospective review of 901 subjects was performed to assess the predictors of thyroxine replacement following hemithyroidectomy. They noted that 94 participants required hormone supplementation over a mean follow up of 21 months whereas hypothyroidism developed in 123 patients. They observed preoperative TSH of more than 2.5 in 38 of 123 of cases. The only independent risk factor for the development of hypothyroidism was the presence of diffuse thyroiditis, as seen on the multivariate analysis.
