Predictors of survival and progression in behavioural variant frontotemporal dementia
European Journal of Neurology Dec 23, 2018
Agarwal S, et al. - Using multivariate modelling, researchers identified factors that predict survival and clinical progression in behavioural variant frontotemporal dementia (bvFTD). For this investigation, consecutive subjects with clinically probable bvFTD were prospectively followed up over an 8-year period. Findings revealed that survival without dependence was anticipated by shorter disease duration at presentation, greater atrophy in the anterior cingulate cortex, older age and a higher burden of behavioural symptoms. Presence of a known pathogenic FTD mutation was the strongest predictor of progression in terms of disease progression. In addition, deficits in letter fluency and greater atrophy in the motor cortex were linked to faster progression. Overall, this investigation provided novel clinical predictors of survival and progression in bvFTD. The outcomes were likely to affect the prognosis and planning of care in this difficult disease.
