Predictors of suicidal ideation among IBD outpatients
Journal of Clinical Gastroenterology Dec 21, 2018
Hashash JG, et al. - In this prospective observational study, researchers determined suicidal ideation (SI) rates among inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) outpatients and assessed predictors of SI. Using patient health questionnaire (PHQ-9), patients were screened for depression and SI. Findings suggested an association of SI with depressive severity and less directly with IBD activity. Low dose tricyclic antidepressants (TCA) is also a risk factor, often used in chronic abdominal pain. They recommended that identifying the subset of IBD patients most vulnerable to SI can make it easier to refer properly to behavioral services and prevent progression to completed suicides.
