Predictors of readmission following proctectomy for rectal cancer
Diseases of the Colon and Rectum May 22, 2019
O’Connell EP, et al. - The predictors of 30-day readmission following proctectomy for rectal cancer were sought via retrospectively analyzing prospectively gathered cohort data. Readmission within 30 days of discharge following index rectal resection, was reported for 31 (12.6%) patients. Readmission within 30 days was noted in significant association to the occurrence of anastomotic leaks, high-output stoma, and surgical site infections. In multivariate analysis, surgical site infections and high-output stoma maintained significant association. Researchers emphasize considering an early postoperative care bundle to detect postoperative complications to prevent some unnecessary inpatient admissions following proctectomy
