Predictors of re-bleeding and mortality among patients with refractory variceal bleeding undergoing salvage transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (TIPS)
Digestive Diseases and Sciences Dec 20, 2018
Maimone S, et al. - Authors studied 144 cases to examine the predictive factors of 6-week and 1-year mortality in subjects undergoing salvage transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (TIPS) for refractory portal hypertensive bleeding. They observed 36% and 42%, 6-week and 12-month mortality respectively, with TIPS failure in 23 cases undergoing salvage TIPS, MELD, and Child-Pugh scores. They also found pre-TIPS intensive care unit stays related independently to TIPS failure and mortality. Salvage TIPS was noted ineffective in candidates with a Child-Pugh score of 14–15.
