Predictors of postoperative complications in paediatric patients receiving grommets – A retrospective analysis
International Journal of Pediatric Otorhinolaryngology Jan 08, 2021
Wang LC, et al. - As one of the most common paediatric surgical procedures performed by ENT surgeons worldwide is the insertion of middle ear ventilation tubes (MEVT), tympanostomy tubes or grommets, researchers conducted this retrospective analysis to identify risk factors associated with early postoperative complications of MEVT insertion. Three hundred eleven patients (205 males & 106 females; median age 3.86 years) met the inclusion criteria and had identical middle ear status bilaterally. No statistically significant associations were found between antibiotic drop exposure and grommet blockage. According to the findings, 8.7% of patients experienced otorrhoea postoperatively within 6 weeks. During the winter/autumn season, < 3 years of age were correlated with the development of otorrhoea. The development of postoperative otorrhoea was inversely associated with topical antibiotic exposure. There was grommet blockage in 6.4% of patients. A statistically important predictor for developing grommet blockage was the development of serous middle ear effusion intraoperatively.
