Predictors of postoperative acute kidney injury in patients undergoing hip fracture surgery: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Injury Oct 11, 2020

Zhou X, Zhang Y, Teng Y, et al. - Researchers analyzed the factors predictive of acute kidney injury (AKI) in patients following hip surgery. Relevant studies were identified from PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane Library, and Web of Science. This meta-analysis involved 10 studies with 34 potential factors. Primary analysis revealed the following 12 factors that were identified to be related to AKI: males, advanced age, myocardial infarction, hypertension, diabetes, chronic kidney disease, hip arthroplasty, angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors/angiotensin receptor blockers use, more intraoperative blood loss, higher preoperative blood urea nitrogen concentrations, higher preoperative serum creatinine concentrations, and lower preoperative estimated glomerular filtration rate. In the systematic review, another 13 factors associated with AKI in individual studies were found. To avoid AKI following hip surgery, execution of related prophylaxis strategies in patients involved with the above-mentioned features is advised.
