Predictors of penetration-aspiration in Parkinson’s Disease patients with dysphagia: A retrospective analysis
Annals of Otology, Rhinology & Laryngology Apr 09, 2019
Gaeckle M, et al. - To distinguish the factors that could predict penetration-aspiration in patients with Parkinson disease (PD), investigators assessed the data of 89 PD patients with dysphagia in this retrospective study. They noticed that penetration-aspiration could be predicted by delayed initiation of the pharyngeal swallow and a decreased hyolaryngeal excursion. They also reported increasing liquid bolus volume had a strong, positive relationship with penetration-aspiration. They did not observe any relationship between PD severity and penetration-aspiration. In order to promote safe oral intake and sufficient nutrition, these results may be valuable for treatment planning.
