Predictors of penetration-aspiration in Parkinson’s disease patients with dysphagia: A retrospective analysis
Annals of Otology, Rhinology & Laryngology Jul 23, 2019
Gaeckle M, et al. - Researchers conducted this retrospective study to identify predictors of penetration-aspiration in patients with Parkinson’s disease (PD). The study sample consisted of 89 PD patients with dysphagia who had routinely conducted videofluoroscopic studies of swallowing. Logistic regression demonstrated that penetration-aspiration predictors were a delayed initiation of the pharyngeal swallow and a decreased hyolaryngeal excursion. In addition, a strong, positive correlation existed between the increased volume of liquid bolus and penetration-aspiration. There was no correlation between PD severity and penetration-aspiration. The results of this research enable a better knowledge of the danger of penetration-aspiration in patients with PD. To enhance secure oral intake and appropriate nutrition, they are helpful for therapy planning.
