Predictors of long-term success and failure in primary and revision endoscopic dacryocystorhinostomy
International Forum of Allergy & Rhinology Nov 26, 2019
Lehmann AE, et al. - In this retrospective review involving 596 individuals, researchers identified patient- and technique-specific factors that can influence surgical outcomes of primary and revision endoscopic dacryocystorhinostomy (endo-DCR), a common treatment of nasolacrimal duct obstruction. The sample consisted of patients who had endo-DCR over a 30-year period (1989-2018). Patients’ demographics and surgical techniques have been evaluated. According to results, 8.5% (n = 10) needed additional revision surgery among the cohort of patients (n = 118) who had revision endo-DCR. Individuals who failed DCR revision tended to be younger, more likely to have intraoperative laser use, and more likely to have an intraoperative complication than the successful revision surgery group. Findings suggested no association of endo-DCR failure with smoking status, middle turbinate resection, or intraoperative visualization of the internal common punctum.
