Predictors of ileus following colorectal resections
American Journal of Surgery Oct 12, 2019
Sapci I, Hameed I, Ceylan A, et al. - Individuals who underwent colorectal resections for any diagnosis (n = 5,369) were recognized from the institutional database between 2009 and 2014 in order to assess risk factors for postoperative ileus in such individuals. Men were twofold as inclined and individuals with anastomosis were 1.4 times more prone to develop ileus, in comparison with those without. Laparoscopic surgery and younger age were related to lower ileus risk. In comparison with cases with diverticular disease, individuals with colorectal cancer, Crohn disease, and ulcerative colitis diagnoses were all more inclined to acquire postoperative ileus. Hence, assessment of factors like male gender, elderly age, anastomosis formation, diagnosis of cancer and inflammatory bowel disease, could aid expedite more advanced diagnosis of postoperative ileus and may need the attention of prophylactic therapy.
