Predictors of high-cost hospitalization in the treatment of acute coronary syndrome in Asia: Findings from EPICOR Asia
BMC Cardiovascular Disorders Jul 11, 2018
Jan S, et al. - Researchers assessed costs, length of stay and the factors that predicted of high costs during an acute coronary syndromes (ACS) hospitalization by using data from the EPICOR Asia (long-tErm follow-uP of antithrombotic management patterns In acute CORonary syndrome patients in Asia) study, wherein patients hospitalized for ACS enrolled in 218 hospitals in eight countries/regions in Asia were examined. Based on the findings, they noted that healthcare costs for hospitalized ACS patients across Asia varied substantially. They observed that the highest costs were reported in China, which was concerning given the rapidly increasing numbers of procedures in recent years. Additionally, the identified significant predictors of high-cost care included age, male sex, income, country, previous disease history, hospitalization within 3 months of index event, no dependency before index event, having an invasive procedure, hospital type, and length of stay.
