Predictors of food sensitization in children and adults across Europe
The Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology: In Practice Apr 29, 2020
Lyons SA, Knulst AC, Burney PGJ, et al. - Researchers analyzed data from 2,196 school-age children and 2,185 adults in the cross-sectional pan-European EuroPrevall project, to determine how demographics, environment, and infant diet are related to food sensitization (FS) among children and adults, with emphasis on early-life exposures. The links between the exposure variables and sensitization to foods often implicated in food allergy (sIgE ≥ 0.35 kU/L) were ascertained by using multivariable logistic regression. Experts identified an inverse link of dog ownership in early childhood as well as of higher gestational age at delivery, with childhood FS. A higher prevalence of adult FS was noted in relation to lower age and male gender. Overall, a seemingly protective impact of dog ownership against the development of childhood FS was revealed, however, no confirmation could be gained for the independent impacts of other currently conceived environmental as well as infant dietary determinants on FS in childhood or adulthood.
