Predictors of falls per step and falls per year at and away from home in glaucoma
American Journal of Ophthalmology Apr 03, 2019
Ramulu PY, et al. - Researchers performed this prospective, observational cohort study assessing where glaucoma patients most often fall and how integrated visual field (IVF) damage influences falls rates per year (falls/year) and per step (falls/step) at and away from home. They collected data of 225 patients with glaucoma or suspected glaucoma regarding falls via calendars. They classified fall location through follow-up questionnaires, and judged steps taken at and away from home by integrating data from annual week-long accelerometer and GPS trials. Falls mostly at home was reported. At home, higher risk of any step resulting in a fall was noted. Those with greater VF damage were at higher risk of fall for each step taken both at and away from home. They recommend considering efforts such as home environmental modification in the visually impaired in order to limit falls while maintaining physical activity.
