Predictors of eustachian tube dysfunction improvement and normalization after endoscopic sinus surgery
The Laryngoscope Nov 21, 2020
Higgins TS, Cappello ZJ, Wu AW, et al. - In this case‐control study, researchers sought to assess factors correlated with improvement and normalization of eustachian tube dysfunction (ETD) symptoms after functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS). The sample consisted of FESS patients who had clinically significant ETD symptoms based on the Eustachian Tube Dysfunction Questionnaire‐7 (ETDQ‐7 ≥ 2.1) without middle ear effusion (MEE) preoperatively. Data on 165 patients were obtained, with 46% of patients having clinically significant preoperative ETD and 60 patients meeting inclusion/exclusion requirements for the final report. FESS was associated with ETDQ‐7 improvement in patients with clinically significant ETD symptoms without MEE. Nasal polyposis was correlated with an increased probability of normalization of ETD symptoms postoperatively, while temporomandibular joint dysfunction had a negative association.
