Predictors of complication following lower extremity amputation in diabetic end-stage renal disease
Nephrology Jun 15, 2018
Park YH, et al. - In this study including patients with diabetic end-stage renal disease (ESRD) (total of 46 amputations) who underwent lower extremity amputation (LEA), researchers investigated the factors that impact complications after LEA in these subjects by retrospectively analyzing electronic medical records. Three categories of outcomes were formed: no complications, minor complications (wounds requiring only local care or oral antibiotics), and major complications (requiring surgical intervention, further amputations, or inducing life-threatening morbidities and mortalities). In this patient populace, preoperative sepsis was identified as an independent risk factor for major complications after LEA. Presence of sepsis also deserves particular caution when performing LEA in diabetic ESRD patients. The preferable strategy was early amputation prior to the development of sepsis.
